Best Time to Call Australia: Dealing with the Country That Has Three Time Zones

๐Ÿ“… June 23, 2026  ยท  โฑ 7 min read  ยท  ๐Ÿท Australia, AEST, Calling Guide

Australia has three main time zones โ€” and during daylight saving, it effectively has five. If you're calling from overseas, this matters more than you might think. Sydney and Melbourne are an hour ahead of Brisbane for half the year, and Perth is a completely different world.

Australia's Time Zones

ZoneStandardDSTMajor Cities
AEST (Eastern)UTC+10UTC+11 (AEDT)Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane*, Canberra
ACST (Central)UTC+9:30UTC+10:30 (ACDT)Adelaide, Darwin
AWST (Western)UTC+8No DSTPerth

*Brisbane doesn't observe DST, so for half the year it's an hour behind Sydney and Melbourne.

DST in Australia runs from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April โ€” the opposite of the Northern Hemisphere. So when it's summer in Europe, it's winter in Australia, and vice versa.

Calling Australia from the US

This is one of the hardest international calling scenarios. The US is 14โ€“16 hours behind Australia's east coast. That means when it's 9 AM in New York, it's 11 PM (or midnight) in Sydney. The overlap is almost non-existent.

Your best bet:

From Pacific time, shift everything back 3 hours. So 4:00 PM PST = 9:00 AM AEST (next day).

The key insight: you need to call in your late afternoon/evening to reach Australia's morning. Morning your time is already evening or night in Australia.

Calling from the UK

The UK is 10โ€“11 hours behind Sydney (depending on DST). Similar problem โ€” your morning is their evening:

From the UK, you're essentially calling at night to reach Australia's morning. It's not ideal, but it's the only overlap.

Calling from Asia

This is where it gets easier. Tokyo (UTC+9) is only 1โ€“2 hours behind Australia's east coast. Singapore (UTC+8) is 2โ€“3 hours behind. The overlap is natural:

If you're in Asia, calling Australia is straightforward. If you're in the US or Europe, it requires planning.

Australia Business Hours

Standard hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM local time. Lunch is typically 12:00โ€“1:00 PM. Government offices may close earlier (4:30 PM in some states).

Australia has public holidays that vary by state. January 26 (Australia Day) and April 25 (ANZAC Day) are national holidays. But things like the Queen's Birthday are celebrated on different dates in different states. It's confusing.

December and January are summer holidays in Australia. Many businesses operate with skeleton staff, and some shut down entirely between Christmas and the first week of January. Don't expect quick responses during this period.
