Best Time to Call Brazil: Four Time Zones and a Lot of Carnival

📅 June 23, 2026  ·  ⏱ 6 min read  ·  🏷 Brazil, Sao Paulo, BRT, Calling Guide

Brazil is the fifth-largest country in the world by area, and it has four time zones. Most of the population — and most of the business activity — is in the BRT (Brasília Time, UTC-3) zone, which covers São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, and the major coastal cities. But if you're calling someone in the Amazon or the far west, the offset is different.

Brazil's Time Zones

ZoneUTC OffsetMajor Cities
BRT (Brasília)UTC-3São Paulo, Rio, Brasília, Salvador, Belo Horizonte
AMT (Amazon)UTC-4Manaus, Porto Velho
ACT (Acre)UTC-5Rio Branco
FNT (Fernando de Noronha)UTC-2Fernando de Noronha (small island)

Brazil abolished daylight saving time in 2019. So the offsets are fixed year-round now — one less thing to worry about.

Calling Brazil from the US

This is one of the easier international calls. Brazil (UTC-3) is only 1–4 hours ahead of US time zones:

The East Coast of the US and Brazil have nearly perfect overlap. This is why so many US companies have offices in São Paulo — the time zones are compatible.

Calling from Europe

Europe is 3–5 hours ahead of Brazil. Your morning is their morning too:

The overlap is decent but not perfect. By the time Europeans are finishing their day, Brazilians are at lunch.

Brazil Business Culture

Brazilian business hours are typically 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM BRT. Lunch is a big deal — 12:00–2:00 PM is common, and it's often a proper meal, not a sandwich at the desk.

Brazilians tend to have a more relaxed approach to punctuality than, say, Germans or Japanese. A meeting scheduled for 10:00 AM might start at 10:15 or 10:30. This isn't disrespect — it's cultural.

Carnival (February or March, depending on the year) is a major shutdown. Many businesses close for the entire week. Don't expect to get anything done in Brazil during Carnival.
