Best Time to Call Canada: It's Basically the US, But With More Time Zones

📅 June 23, 2026  ·  ⏱ 6 min read  ·  🏷 Canada, Toronto, Vancouver, Calling Guide

Canada shares most of its time zones with the United States. Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific — they're the same offsets. But Canada has a couple of unique ones (Newfoundland, with its UTC-3:30 offset, is a fun quirk), and the country spans six time zones total.

Canadian Time Zones

ZoneStandardDSTMajor Cities
PacificUTC-8 (PST)UTC-7 (PDT)Vancouver, Victoria
MountainUTC-7 (MST)UTC-6 (MDT)Calgary, Edmonton
CentralUTC-6 (CST)UTC-5 (CDT)Winnipeg, Regina
EasternUTC-5 (EST)UTC-4 (EDT)Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa
AtlanticUTC-4 (AST)UTC-3 (ADT)Halifax, Saint John
NewfoundlandUTC-3:30 (NST)UTC-2:30 (NDT)St. John's

That Newfoundland time zone — UTC-3:30 — is one of only a few 30-minute offset time zones in the world. It's the same as Iran and parts of Australia. If you're calling St. John's, remember the half hour.

Calling Canada from Outside

The advice is essentially the same as calling the US, because the time zones are the same. Toronto (Eastern) follows the same schedule as New York. Vancouver (Pacific) matches Los Angeles.

The main difference: Canada's business culture is a bit more formal than the US in some sectors. Government offices, banks, and traditional industries tend to stick to strict 9-to-5 hours. Tech companies in Toronto and Vancouver are more flexible.

Canadian Holidays

Canada has different public holidays than the US. Canada Day is July 1 (not July 4). Thanksgiving is the second Monday in October (not November). And there's no Presidents' Day — instead, there's Family Day in February (in most provinces).

Quebec has its own holiday calendar. Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day (June 24) is a big deal in Quebec, and many businesses close.
