Here's a fun fact: China spans five geographical time zones but uses only one — China Standard Time (CST), UTC+8. This means in western China (Xinjiang, Tibet), the sun doesn't rise until 10:00 AM in winter. Locals in Xinjiang often use their own unofficial "Xinjiang Time" (UTC+6) for daily life, even though officially everything runs on Beijing time.

CST at a Glance

Calling China from the US

The US is 12–15 hours behind China. Your evening is their morning:

From Pacific time: 5:00–7:00 PM PST = 9:00–11:00 AM CST (next day).

Calling from Europe

Europe is 6–8 hours behind China. Your morning is their afternoon:

Calling from Asia-Pacific

This is easy. Japan (UTC+9) is one hour ahead. Singapore (UTC+8) is the same time. Australia's east coast (UTC+10/11) is 2–3 hours ahead. The overlap is natural.

China Business Hours

Standard business hours are 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM CST, Monday through Friday. Lunch is 12:00–1:30 PM — a longer break than in many Western countries.

Tech companies in China often work late. The "996" schedule (9 AM to 9 PM, 6 days a week) was famously common in Chinese tech, though it's been officially discouraged since 2021. Still, don't be surprised if your Chinese counterpart is available at 8 PM their time.

China's public holidays are a minefield for scheduling. Chinese New Year (late January or February) shuts down the country for a week or more. Golden Week (October 1–7) is another major holiday. During these periods, many businesses are completely closed and responses will be slow.

One more thing: internet restrictions in China mean that many Western communication tools (Zoom, Google Meet, WhatsApp) don't work reliably. WeChat and DingTalk are the standard platforms. If you're setting up a call with Chinese contacts, ask them which platform they prefer.
