The Village With Two Time Zones on One Street

There's a village where the time zone border runs down the middle of a street. Not between two countries — within a single country. Your neighbor across the road lives in a different time zone.

This isn't hypothetical. It happens in several places on Earth.

Baarle-Hertog (Belgium/Netherlands)

The most famous case: a Belgian town inside the Netherlands, with Dutch territory inside the Belgian town, like a fractal of borders. The time zone border between Belgium (CET, UTC+1) and the Netherlands (also CET, UTC+1) doesn't cause issues here — they're on the same zone. But the principle is the same: you can walk across a border and change legal systems in 10 seconds.

More Extreme: Nepal/India Border

Nepal is UTC+5:45. India is UTC+5:30. The border between them is a 15-minute time zone change. In border towns, shops on one side of the street open and close 15 minutes before the other side. People literally walk "into the future" or "into the past" by crossing the road.

The US-Canada Border in Maine/Quebec

Between the US (Eastern Time) and Canada (also Eastern Time in Quebec), there's no issue. But between New Brunswick (Atlantic Time, UTC-4) and Maine (Eastern Time, UTC-5), the border creates a one-hour shift. In the village of Estcourt Station, Maine, residents can look across the border into Canada and see clocks one hour ahead.

The Weirdest: Kentucky/Indiana

Indiana has a complicated relationship with time zones. Some counties are on Eastern Time, some on Central. The result: within a single state, you can drive 30 minutes and lose an hour. In the town of Marengo, Indiana, the time zone boundary literally splits communities.

What This Means for Travelers

If you're near a time zone border, your phone might pick up the wrong cell tower and display the wrong time. GPS doesn't help — it gives you your position, not the local time zone. The only reliable way to know the correct time is to ask someone or check which side of the border you're on.

I once set my watch to the wrong time for three days because my phone auto-updated to a tower across a border. I didn't notice until I showed up an hour late to a meeting. Lesson learned: near borders, double-check manually.
