Why Nepal Uses UTC+5:45 — The Story Behind the 45-Minute Time Zone

📅 2026-06-27 · ⏱ 7 min read · 🏷 Nepal

There are only three 45-minute time zones on Earth. Nepal is the most prominent one. While most of the world has settled into full-hour offsets from UTC, Nepal chose to stand alone at UTC+5:45 — 45 minutes ahead of India and 15 minutes behind China.

The Geography Behind the Number

Nepal stretches roughly from 80°E to 88°E longitude. The standard time zone for 82.5°E would be UTC+5:30 (which is what India uses). But Kathmandu, the capital, sits at 85.3°E. Solar noon in Kathmandu — when the sun reaches its highest point — happens around 11:45 AM if the country uses UTC+5:30. By choosing UTC+5:45, Nepal shifts solar noon to approximately 12:15 PM, which is close enough to feel "normal" for daily life.

Why Not Just Use India's Time?

India's UTC+5:30 would put Kathmandu about 15 minutes behind solar noon. That is not much, but Nepal has historically resisted aligning its timezone with New Delhi. The country wanted a distinct identity — a time zone that says "we are not India, not China, we are Nepal." The 45-minute offset became a point of national pride.

The Other Two 45-Minute Zones

Nepal is not entirely alone. Chatham Islands (New Zealand) uses UTC+12:45, and a small region around Eucla in Western Australia unofficially uses UTC+8:45. But Nepal is the only sovereign nation where the entire country runs on a 45-minute offset.

What This Means for Travelers

If you are flying from Delhi to Kathmandu, you gain 15 minutes. If you are flying from Bangkok, you lose 1 hour and 15 minutes. Most international flight booking systems handle it correctly, but some calendar apps still do not display Nepal time properly. Always double-check meeting times when scheduling across South Asia.

Does It Cause Problems?

Internally, no. Nepalis are used to it. Externally, it adds a small friction layer. International business partners need to remember that Nepal is not on the half-hour like India — it is on the three-quarter hour. But for a country that sits between two giants, that small friction is part of the identity.
